Description
Attacking drill where two attackers try to beat one defender and finish on goal. The drill helps players practice decision-making, timing of passes, supporting runs, dribbling to commit the defender, and finishing under pressure.
Blue attacker A1 starts the attack by passing into A2. As soon as the pass is played, the yellow defender D becomes active and recovers to defend. A2 drives forward with the ball, A1 supports the attack, and the two attackers play 2v1 to goal against the defender.
The aim is for the attackers to create a clear finishing chance by using speed, timing, good support angles, and quick decision-making.
Coaching Points
- A2 should take a positive first touch forward.
- Attack quickly before the defender can get set.
- The ball carrier should drive at the defender to make them commit.
- A1 should support at an angle, not run directly behind the defender.
- Keep good spacing between the two attackers.
- Do not pass too early; wait until the defender is forced to choose.
- Use the pass, dribble, or shot depending on the defender’s position.
- The supporting attacker should stay ready for a pass, rebound, or cutback.
- Defender should recover quickly, delay the attack, and try to force play wide.
Progressions
- Add a time limit to finish, such as 6–8 seconds.
- Allow the defender to counter-score in mini goals if they win the ball.
- Start the defender closer to the attackers to increase pressure.
- Start the defender deeper to give attackers more success.
- Add a recovering second defender to create a 2v2 after a few seconds.
