Drill Area Calculator
Use this soccer drill area calculator to find the right pitch size for small-sided games and possession drills for your youth soccer training sessions. Based on the Relative Pitch Area (RPA) method, the calculator uses the age group, number of players, area size and pitch shape to work out the total training area and recommended dimensions — helping coaches give players the right amount of space to develop.
How the RPA method works
Relative Pitch Area, or RPA, is the amount of space each player has in a soccer or football training drill, measured in square meters or square yards per player. It helps coaches choose the right drill area for small-sided games, possession drills and youth soccer training.
Younger players, tighter possession games and high-pressure practices usually need a smaller area per player. Older players, larger-sided games and more expansive tactical practices often need more space. This soccer drill area calculator multiplies the recommended RPA by the number of players to calculate the total training area.
How to calculate your drill area
Choose an age group, number of players, area size and pitch shape to turn the total area into practical pitch dimensions. You can create a balanced rectangle, wide rectangle, narrow rectangle, square, circle or triangle, then switch between meters and yards to match your training setup.
Use the recommended dimensions to mark out your small-sided game or possession drill before training, giving players the right amount of space for the technical, tactical and physical outcomes you want.
