Description

A 2v2 game is a great formats for U8 to U12 players because every player is constantly involved. It creates lots of touches, 1v1 moments, simple passing decisions, defending opportunities, and chances to score, without long waits or complicated rules.

For U8, keep it playful and free-flowing. For U10-U12, you can add more detail around movement, support, and decision-making.

Set up a small rectangular pitch with a mini-goal or pair of cones at each end. Use several pitches if you have a larger group so that everyone plays at the same time.

Play 2v2 with no goalkeepers. If uneven numbers, add a neutral player who always plays for the team in possession to create a numerical advantage. Each game runs for short rounds of 2–4 minutes. When the ball goes out, restart quickly with a dribble-in, pass-in, or a new ball from the coach.

After each round, rotate teams or partners so players face different opponents.

Suggested pitch size

  1. U8: around 10x15m
  2. U10-U12: around 12x18m

Coaching Points

  1. Spread out when your team has the ball.
  2. Dribble when there is space.
  3. Pass when a teammate is in a better position.
  4. Move after passing to support your teammate.
  5. Help your teammate by giving them an angle, not standing directly behind a defender.
  6. When defending, stay between the opponent and the goal.
  7. Defend together as a team.
  8. React quickly when possession changes.
  9. Encourage players to make decisions rather than waiting for instructions.

Progressions

  1. Each team attacks two small goals instead of one. This encourages players to look up, change direction, and find space.
  2. Replace goals with an end zone. A team scores by dribbling or passing into the end zone under control.
