Description
A small-sided possession game where two teams try to score by dribbling or passing into an end zone. The drill encourages support play, passing angles, movement off the ball, decision-making, and recognizing when to keep possession or attack space.
Set up a rectangular area with an end zone at each end. Approximately 25 x 18 meters, including two end zones of about 3–4 meters each.
Play 3v3 in the middle. A team scores by successfully getting the ball into the opponent’s end zone under control, either by dribbling in or receiving a pass inside the zone. Defenders can intercept in the main pitch, but cannot enter their own end zones, forcing attackers to be clever with their passing angles.
Optionally, add one or two neutral players (floaters) who always play for the team in possession to create a numerical advantage.
Coaching Points
- Create width and depth to give the player on the ball options.
- Move after passing to support the next action.
- Scan before receiving to know where teammates, defenders, and space are.
- Be patient in possession, but attack quickly when space opens.
- Encourage quick transitions after winning or losing the ball.
- Defenders should stay compact, communicate, and protect the end zone.
- Look for opportunities to switch play if one side becomes crowded.
- Time runs into the end zone instead of standing there waiting.
Progressions
- Require a pass into the end zone instead of dribbling in.
- Add a condition that every player must touch the ball before scoring.
- Limit touches to encourage quicker decisions.
- Add neutral players to create overloads for the team in possession.
- Progress to 4v4 or 5v5 while keeping the same scoring rule.
