Description

A competitive 1v1 drill where the attacker tries to dribble through a small cone gate while the defender tries to stop them. The drill helps players practice dribbling skills as well as defensive body shape, patience, footwork, timing, and winning the ball without diving in.

Set up two small gates a few meters apart. The blue attacker starts opposite the gates, facing the yellow defender. The defender begins near the gates with a ball, passes to the attacker, then immediately moves out to defend. The attacker scores by dribbling under control through either gate. Rotate roles after each attempt or after a short round.

Coaching Points

Offensive

  1. Take a positive first touch into space.
  2. Use feints, body movement, or a change of pace to unbalance the defender.
  3. Keep the ball close when near the defender.
  4. Take a bigger touch into space after beating the defender.
  5. Protect the ball with your body when the defender gets close.
  6. Keep your head up between touches to see which gate is open.
  7. Do not stop after the skill move; the acceleration after the move is what creates separation.

Defensive

  1. Defender should get close quickly, then slow down under control.
  2. Keep eyes on the ball, not just the attacker’s feet or body feints.
  3. Force the attacker away from the gate.
  4. Be patient and avoid diving in too early.
  5. Use small, quick steps to adjust position.
  6. Look for the right moment to tackle, block, or poke the ball away.

Progressions

  1. Make the gates wider to give the attacker more success early on.
  2. Make the gates smaller to challenge the attacker’s control.
  3. Move the gates farther apart to make defending harder.
  4. Move the gates closer together to make defending easier.
  5. Add a time limit, such as 6–8 seconds, for the attacker to score.
  6. Allow the defender to score by winning the ball and dribbling through either gate.
  7. Let the attacker receive with their back to goal to work on turning under pressure.
  8. Progress into 2v2 with two gates, encouraging covering and communication.
