Description

Develop ball control, movement and passing decisions to keep possession under pressure. Players practise combining short passes with switches of play to find space away from defenders.

Divide players into three teams of 3–4, adapting the pitch size to their age and ability. Two teams work together to keep possession against the third team.

After a set time, or when the defending team wins the ball, swap the defenders with one of the possession teams.

Coaching Points

  1. Control with the sole: Keep the ball close and use the first touch to prepare the next pass or move away from pressure.
  2. Spread out: Use the width and depth of the area to stretch the defenders and create space.
  3. Support the ball: Move after passing and offer clear passing angles so the player in possession has options.
  4. Look beyond the nearest player: After a few short passes draw defenders towards the ball, look for a longer pass into space on the other side.
  5. Keep your head up: Check where teammates, defenders and space are before receiving.
