Description
This possession drill with bouncers and scoring zones helps players improve spacing, scanning, passing angles and decision-making. The four scoring zones encourage players to spread out, use width and depth, and recognize when to play into space.
Set up a rectangular playing area with four neutral bouncers positioned around the outside. Add four scoring zones inside the playing area, one near each corner.
Play 3v3, 4v4 or 5v5 in the middle. The team in possession can use the bouncers to help keep the ball and create better passing angles. A team scores a point by playing a pass to a teammate who receives the ball inside one of the scoring zones.
The aim is to encourage players to spread out, scan for space, avoid crowding around the ball and use the full area.
Progressions
- Limit inside players to 2 or 3 touches.
- Limit bouncers to one-touch or two-touch play.
Coaching Points
- Scan before receiving to know where pressure, space and teammates are.
- Create width and depth by spreading out across the area.
- Move away from the ball to create passing lanes and avoid crowding.
- Use bouncers to escape pressure and change the direction of play.
- Support at good angles, not directly behind defenders.
- Rotate positions so players arrive into zones at the right time rather than standing in them.
