Description

This possession drill with neutral bouncers helps players improve scanning, passing angles, width, depth and decision-making under pressure. By using outside support players, the game encourages teams to recognize space, keep possession and avoid crowding around the ball.

Set up a rectangular playing area with four neutral bouncers positioned around the outside. Play 3v3, 4v4 or 5v5 inside the area.

The team in possession can use the bouncers to keep the ball and create better passing angles. Bouncers play with the team in possession and return the ball back into play.

The aim is to keep possession by using width, depth and quick support instead of crowding around the ball.

Progressions

  1. Limit inside players to 2 or 3 touches.
  2. Limit bouncers to one-touch or two-touch play.
  3. Award a point for a set number of passes in a row.
  4. Require the team to use opposite-side bouncers before scoring a point.

Coaching Points

  1. Scan before receiving to know where pressure, space and teammates are.
  2. Create width and depth by spreading out across the area.
  3. Move away from the ball to create passing lanes and avoid crowding.
  4. Use bouncers to escape pressure and change the direction of play.
  5. Support at good angles, not directly behind defenders.
