Description
Create a square using 4 cones. The distance between cones typically ranges from 5m to 15m, depending on player age and skill level.
Place at least one player at each of the 4 cones and one extra at the starting cone. Additional players can be placed behind any of the cones.
The player with the ball passes to the player at the next cone and immediately jogs or sprints to follow their pass. Players must always be ready to receive the ball and move into the open space.
Coaching Points
- Create a good passing angle before asking for the ball.
- Take your first touch in the direction you want to play.
- Move immediately after passing; do not stand still and watch.
- Keep the tempo high, but prioritize accuracy and clean technique over speed.
Progressions
- Add a second ball to increase scanning, communication, and tempo.
- Change passing direction.
- Limit players to two touches: first touch to control, second touch to pass.
- Progress to one-touch passing for more advanced players.
- Mandate that players use only their weaker foot for passing and/or receiving.
- Change the size of the square.
